By [Your Name]

On a sunny afternoon in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, we arrived at the airport with a sense of purpose. While the country is renowned for its picturesque beach resorts, our focus was on something more profound. As representatives of the United States’ skilled beach volleyball referees, we were about to embark on a transformative experience at the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Referee Course.

This course aimed to equip emerging referees from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean with the skills needed for international beach volleyball matches. Held at the NORCECA/FIVB Regional Volleyball Development Center, we joined referees from various countries, including Belize, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and St. Kitts and Nevis. The opening ceremony commenced with President of the Dominican Volleyball Federation, Ramon Garcia, expressing his gratitude to NORCECA for organizing this crucial beach referee course. Indhira Ramirez, the Director of the Beach Volleyball Department of NORCECA Confederation, emphasized the significance of beach volleyball’s growth in NORCECA and the increasing participation of female referees, with five women attending this course.

The mornings were dedicated to the theoretical aspects of officiating, conducted in classroom sessions. FIVB instructor and International Referee Andre Trottier engaged us in discussions about challenging issues in beach volleyball, where rule interpretation and application face new complexities due to changes in play. Miguel Ramirez provided theoretical scorer training and led practical on-court sessions in the afternoons.

Divided into four groups, we rotated through various roles, such as first referee, second referee, scorer, and line judge. This arrangement allowed us to collaborate and function effectively in teams, each simulating working with different languages and personalities. Furthermore, we received valuable guidance on nutrition and learned about the psychological aspects of our demanding work, nurturing our minds and bodies.

The course reached its pinnacle with a final exam assessing our theoretical knowledge and practical performance. Following the exams, we savored a relaxing afternoon exploring the historic district of Santo Domingo with our classmates.

During the closing ceremony, NORCECA acknowledged the exemplary performances of Kirsten, Magdalena, and a Canadian referee, rewarding them for achieving the highest marks in the class. Each of us received a certificate of course completion personally handed by NORCECA President Cristobal Marte Hoffiz. In his closing speech, he encouraged all officials and staff to strive for excellence. Kirsten shared heartfelt words of gratitude, expressing our appreciation for the officials and staff’s unwavering hospitality and dedication throughout this remarkable course.

We consider it an immense honor to have been selected for this invaluable opportunity and are excited to continue our journey of growth as officials in the future.
