Florida Region Spearheads Hurricane Relief Efforts

When the USA Volleyball community reached out for help in the wake of Hurricane Michael, the Florida Region stepped up to the plate. Led by Executive Director Steve Bishop, the region’s staff delivered over $4,000 worth of supplies to support the Gulf Coast Region volleyball families affected by the disaster.

Joining Bishop on this mission were Mary Andrew, the Florida Region Commissioner/Board Chair, Michele Moriarty, the Registrar/Senior Business Manager, and Molly O’Bryan, the Indoor Events Coordinator. Together, they made a significant impact in helping those in need.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Bishop rallied support and raised an impressive $16,500 through donations from members in Florida, as well as the Arizona, Great Lakes, and Old Dominion Regions. These funds were presented to Gulf Coast Commissioner Phillip Bryant and will be used to address additional needs that arise in the coming weeks and months.

In a heartfelt thank-you note to the contributing regions, Bishop described the devastation he encountered, saying, “The area was a mess. It looked like a bomb went off for miles and miles.” He witnessed power company crews working tirelessly to restore electricity and numerous businesses serving the first responders and power crews. As a Florida native with over 50 years of hurricane experience, Bishop emphasized that Hurricane Michael was particularly devastating to the Florida Panhandle region.

The Florida Region headquarters served as a collection site for donated items, ranging from water, toiletries, and work gloves to nonperishable food items and much more. Monetary donations were used to purchase additional supplies like cat and dog food, flashlights, batteries, air mattresses, and duct tape.

The impact of the support from the larger USAV family was clearly visible, with one club director moved to tears upon seeing the outpouring of support.

Hurricane Michael inflicted significant damage on Panama City, home to Bay United Elite Volleyball (BUEV) of the Gulf Coast Region. Ten schools in the area suffered major structural damage to their gyms, negatively affecting the club’s tournaments and practices. As a result, BUEV made the difficult decision to suspend the 2018-19 travel season.
