Beach Update: Rio Roster, NORCECA Playoff #2

The FIVB World Tour is making a comeback after a three-week break, with the NORCECA Continental Tour playoff taking place in Manhattan Beach on May 16.

The collegiate beach volleyball season came to a close with the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships in Hermosa Beach, California. Now, teams are gearing up for the FIVB World Tour, AVP Tour, and NORCECA.

At the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro, the United States is sending six teams to the main draw, along with one women’s team through qualification. The 4-Star tournament will feature a 32-team main draw per gender and a single-elimination qualification round with 16 teams, advancing eight teams to the main draw. The top three teams from each pool will move on to the round of 24 for the main draw single elimination. The tournament begins on May 17, with the main draw starting on the 18th and the medal matches concluding the event on May 21.

Among the women’s teams, Lane Carico and Lauren Fendrick are partnering up for their first FIVB tournament. They recently played together at the AVP Huntington Beach Open on May 4. Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, newly graduated and officially professional, will also be making their debut in Rio. As for the men’s pairs, all three teams have previous experience playing together. Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar, as well as Kimberly DiCello and Emily Stockman, will also represent the U.S. in the tournament.
