WNT Ends VNL Prelims with Impressive Win and Best Record

The U.S. Women’s National Team has solidified their position as the world’s top-ranked team by ending the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) preliminary phase with an outstanding record. In a thrilling match against Germany, the U.S. secured a 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-13, 13-25, 25-22) in Calgary, Alberta. This win not only showcased their dominance but also secured their spot as the top-ranked team heading into the VNL final phase.

During the preliminary phase, the U.S. Women’s National Team showcased their strength by achieving an impressive 11-1 record, winning all but seven sets played. This remarkable performance is a testament to their consistent dedication and skill on the court.

Head Coach Karch Kiraly expressed his admiration for the team, commending their ability to perform exceptionally well despite the challenges of different travel groups and starting lineups. He emphasized how the team brought out the best in each other and remained resilient, even during difficult moments. Kiraly expressed his satisfaction with the team’s response and their overall performance during the VNL.

The U.S. Women’s National Team is now one of the eight teams that will compete for the VNL title from July 13-17 in Ankara, Türkiye. Having already won three VNL titles in 2018, 2019, and 2021, the team is eager to add another prestigious victory to their name.

Their upcoming quarterfinal match against Serbia promises to be an intense encounter. The U.S. Women’s National Team previously defeated Serbia 3-0 (25-17, 33-31, 25-16) on June 30. The team is motivated to carry their winning momentum into the next phase of the tournament.

Sarah Wilhite Parsons, an exceptional outside hitter for the U.S. team, expressed her satisfaction with their performance and the team’s ability to finish on a high note. She acknowledged the tough challenge presented by Germany, particularly in the third and fourth sets, but credited the team’s calm approach and determination for their victory.

The U.S. Women’s National Team demonstrated their dominance in various scoring categories against Germany. They registered 51 attacks compared to Germany’s 50, as well as 11 blocks to Germany’s seven. Additionally, they recorded six service aces, surpassing Germany’s three. While Germany excelled in digs and receptions, the U.S. outshined them in vital aspects of the game.

Wilhite Parsons had an exceptional individual performance, scoring an impressive 24 points with 18 kills, four blocks, and two aces. Her attack efficiency of 30% and scoring rate of 42% on her swings showcased her skill and effectiveness on the court. Jordan Thompson, another talented outside hitter, contributed 14 points, with 12 coming from successful attacks. Kathryn Plummer also made a notable impact, finding the floor 10 times.

The U.S. Women’s National Team dominated the first two sets, securing comfortable victories. In the first set, they established an early lead and maintained their advantage despite a spirited German rally. The U.S. continued their dominance in the second set, capitalizing on an 8-1 scoring run. Wilhite Parsons played a crucial role in both sets, contributing 17 points.

However, Germany fought back with determination and claimed a 13-25 victory in the third set. The fourth set was fiercely contested, with three lead changes and seven tie scores. Tori Dixon’s pivotal block pulled the U.S. within one point at 6-8, and she later tied the match by capitalizing on an over pass. Thompson’s subsequent kill gave the U.S. the lead, and they never trailed again.

Kiraly acknowledged the team’s accomplishment of finishing at the top of the season standings, but emphasized that this achievement would have no bearing on the Finals week. He expressed the team’s eagerness to start fresh and face the world’s best teams in Ankara.
