New Quad Brings New World League Squad

The U.S. Men’s National Team is gearing up for the FIVB World League with a fresh roster, providing an opportunity for young players to gain international experience. With a focus on balancing youth and experience, Head Coach John Speraw aims to develop the potential of talented newcomers.

In the previous quadrennial, the U.S. Men’s Team secured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, following their fifth-place finish at the 2016 FIVB World League. Tied for the No. 2 world ranking with Poland, the team is set to begin its summer training block on May 8 at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California.

Six players from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team, including Micah Christenson, Thomas Jaeschke, Taylor Sander, Erik Shoji, David Smith, and Kawika Shoji, will return to the roster. However, some Olympians will not be participating, with Aaron Russell nursing an injury, Murphy Troy retiring, and Reid Priddy focusing on beach volleyball.

In addition, Matt Anderson and Max Holt will have a break from the early season but are expected to rejoin the team later this year for the USAV Cup. David Lee, a three-time Olympic middle blocker, will also take a season off.
