Chiaka Ogbogu: Making a Positive Impact On and Off the Court

Like many volleyball players in the United States, Chiaka Ogbogu, a middle blocker for the U.S. Women’s National Team, is currently playing overseas. This season, she has joined Eczacıbaşı VitrA, a professional club in Turkey. While leaving her family and friends is always challenging, Ogbogu found solace in Turkey due to the relatively low impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the US. With strict mask-wearing policies and regular testing, the team prioritizes safety. However, Ogbogu’s impact off the court is equally impressive. She actively participates in the fight for social justice, engaging in rallies, and advocating for diversity and inclusion in USA Volleyball. As a representative of Black athletes, Ogbogu aims to inspire the younger generation and create more opportunities for people of color in the sport.

The Journey of Chiaka Ogbogu

Chiaka Ogbogu’s journey in volleyball has been remarkable. Born to Nigerian parents, her family moved to the US, where she discovered her love for sports. Although she initially doubted her skills, Ogbogu’s height caught the attention of coaches, leading her to join a club team. She played for the renowned Texas Advantage Volleyball and achieved numerous victories, including the 18 Open championship. In high school, she led Coppell High School to back-to-back Texas 5A state championships and was recognized as the Gatorade Texas High School Player of the Year. Ogbogu continued her volleyball career at the University of Texas, where she excelled and became the all-time blocks leader for the university.

Rising Through the Ranks

Ogbogu earned her spot in the U.S. Women’s National Team in 2018, playing in the Pan American Cup and winning a gold medal. The following year, she had an even more impactful role, contributing to the team’s victories in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League, the FIVB World Cup, and the NORCECA Championship. Reflecting on her journey, Ogbogu expressed her gratitude and the surreal experience of playing with the Women’s National Team. She hopes to continue representing the United States and dreams of competing in at least one Olympic Games.

Off the court, Ogbogu is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in volleyball. She emphasizes the importance of representation and its life-changing impact on young black volleyball players.
