Men’s U21 Ends World Championship Pool Play With Loss to Mexico

The U.S. Men’s U21 National Team concluded their World Championship pool play with a 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22) defeat against Mexico in Manama, Bahrain on July 13, 2023.

Despite their winless record in the championship so far, the U.S. team displayed exceptional effort, particularly from outside hitter Dillon Klein. The second set witnessed a closely contested battle, with the U.S. team coming back from a 17-13 deficit to level the score at 18. However, Mexico secured the final two points of the set after a 24-24 tie.

The U.S. team held the lead for the entirety of the third set, with Klein’s kill providing a six-point advantage at 24-18. In the fourth set, Mexico maintained control and although the U.S. team reduced the deficit to one point twice late in the set (21-20 and 23-22), Mexico ultimately emerged victorious.

Mexican player Jorge Ariel Hernández Cabrera, who previously excelled as the top outside hitter at the Pan American Cup U23 in 2021, led his team with 17 points and 16 kills.
