U.S. Medals at 2023 Pan Am Games

The 2023 Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile saw a strong performance from the U.S. team, with Corinne Quiggle and Sarah Murphy bringing home the bronze medal. In a thrilling match, they defeated Ana Gallay/Fernanda Pereyra from Argentina with a score of 2-0 (21-18, 21-10). Quiggle and Murphy’s success was built on their unbeaten run in the pool stage, which earned them a spot in the quarterfinals.

After a convincing victory over Chris Vorpahl/Francisca Rivas (CHI) in the quarterfinals, Quiggle and Murphy faced the world No. 1 team of Ana Patricia/Duda (BRA) in the semifinals. Although they were defeated with a score of 2-0 (21-11, 21-18), their performance secured them a place in the bronze medal match.

Quiggle expressed her pride in their achievement, stating, “We are really proud to be taking home the bronze medal here in Chile. We worked hard to get here and had a great semifinal match against the world No. 1 team. To bounce back and play against Argentina, who are also a strong team, was amazing.”

In the women’s final match, the U.S. team showcased their skills with 12 successful attacks, three blocks, and six forced errors from their opponents. Reflecting on the overall atmosphere of the Pan Am Games, Murphy remarked, “It’s been an incredible energy all week out here. The setting, the venue, and the fans have all been fantastic. It’s been a really fun environment to play in, especially alongside Corinne. We’re really happy to be bringing home the bronze medal.”

On the men’s side of the tournament, Logan Webber and Hagen Smith fought hard in the bronze medal match against Marco Grimalt/Esteban Grimalt from Chile. Although they forced the match into three sets, they narrowly missed out on victory, losing with a score of 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-12).

Smith expressed his appreciation for the crowd and the opportunity to compete, saying, “It was a great crowd. It’s fun to play in front of knowledgeable volleyball fans. You could tell they know the game and are very into it.”

Webber and Smith’s fourth-place finish highlighted their strong performance throughout the Pan Am Games. They remained undefeated in the pool stage and secured a place in the quarterfinals with a victory over Miguell Sarabia/Juan Virgen (MEX). In the semifinals, they faced Jorge Alayo/Noslen Diaz (CUB) and despite a valiant effort, were defeated with a score of 2-0 (21-15, 21-13), which led them to the bronze-medal match.

Webber reflected on their performance, saying, “We finished well and made it a game at the end. Just a point or two away from making it more interesting. The crowd was awesome, and it was a fun match.”

Overall, the U.S. team’s performance at the 2023 Pan Am Games showcased their talent and determination. They brought home two bronze medals and demonstrated their skill on the international stage.
