Beach Update: Junior Beach Tour Championships

This past week was an exciting one for beach volleyball, with multiple major events taking place. In addition, the 2016 Olympic Games pool play schedule was released. Now, let’s turn our attention to the upcoming Junior Beach Tour Championships.

USA Volleyball continues to promote junior talent with the Junior Beach Tour Championships, taking place in Milwaukee from July 22-24. This event serves as a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and compete against their peers.

Recapping last week’s events, we saw success for the U.S. both domestically and internationally. At the World University Championships in Estonia, USC student-athletes Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes secured the gold medal in the women’s category. Madison and McKenna Witt from the University of Arizona earned an impressive silver.

On the NORCECA Tour, Betsi Metter and Kelley Larsen claimed silver, while Miles Evans and Spencer McLachlin achieved a career-best bronze finish. Back in the U.S., the High Performance Championships showcased talent across various age groups, with Aidan Brown and Lucas Lossone earning the title in the Under 19 category.

The AVP Manhattan Beach Open featured three of the four Olympic-bound beach pairs. Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson emerged as champions in the men’s division, while Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day claimed victory in the women’s division. Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena unfortunately had to retire from the semifinal match due to a calf injury. Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat secured a tied third-place finish.

April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings, seeded third, will play their first match at midnight (local time).

Now, let’s dive into the details of the upcoming Junior Beach Tour Championships. Returning to Milwaukee’s beautiful Bradford Beach, this year’s championships will take place from July 22 to 24. The Junior Beach Tour has already seen success throughout the year, with 72 events leading up to the championships. But the tour doesn’t end there! The West Coast Championships are scheduled for August 25-26 in Long Beach, California.

Looking ahead, the FIVB World Tour will return to the United States immediately following the Olympics. The Long Beach Grand Slam, also known as the World Series of Beach Volleyball, will commence on August 23. This event is expected to attract not only the four American Olympic teams but also a significant number of teams from other countries.
