GYNT Downs Brazil, Reaches U18 Worlds Gold Match

The U.S. Girls Youth National Team (GYNT) achieved a remarkable victory, securing a spot in the gold-medal match of the FIVB Girls’ U18 World Championship. The team defeated Brazil with a score of 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 in the semifinals held in Ismailia, Egypt on September 13, 2019.

With an impressive overall record of 6-1 in the tournament, Team USA will have the opportunity to redeem their only loss in the gold-medal match against the reigning champion, Italy, on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Italy, who overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat China in the second semifinal, remains undefeated in the competition. In the preliminary round, Italy staged a remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the American team. Both the U.S. and Brazil entered the semifinals with 5-1 records, having finished second in their respective pools.

The American team has previously clinched silver medals at the biennial age-group World Championships in 2013 and 2015. This year, they are determined to secure their first-ever age-group indoor volleyball World Championship title, both in the men’s and women’s divisions.

The top performers for Team USA in the semifinal match against Brazil were Emily Londot, Caroline Crawford, and Devyn Robinson. Londot led the charge with 16 points, including 13 kills, two blocks, and an ace. Crawford contributed seven blocks, two aces, and five kills, while Robinson recorded eight kills and five blocks. The team displayed exceptional defensive skills, preventing Brazil from gaining any momentum throughout the match.

According to Coach Jim Stone, the team’s consistent performance was key to their victory. They executed their strategy flawlessly, preventing Brazil from going on any significant runs. Stone commended the players for their balanced and even performance, which contributed to the team’s success.

In terms of statistics, Team USA showcased their dominance at the net, achieving a 17-4 block advantage. They also outperformed Brazil in aces and attack points, with a 7-2 margin and a 41-21 advantage, respectively. Setter Kennedi Orr played a vital role in setting up the team’s attacks, contributing to their impressive kill percentage and hitting efficiency.

The U.S. Girls Youth National Team demonstrated their strength, unity, and determination, propelling them to the gold-medal match. The team composition included several talented athletes such as Lexi Rodriguez, Elena Oglivie, Jess Mruzik, and Allison Jacobs, among others. Head Coach Jim Stone led the team, with Nicki Holmes, Jen Flynn Oldenburg serving as Assistant Coaches, and Mike Gee as the Technical Coordinator. The Head of Delegation was Meredith Lee.
