U.S. Women’s Olympic Pool Opponents Set

The U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team is geared up for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. As the top-ranked team in the world, they have been placed into Pool B alongside China, the second-ranked team, and four other formidable competitors.

In Pool B, the U.S. Women will also face off against Serbia, Italy, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico. Pool A, on the other hand, consists of host Brazil, Russia, Japan, Korea, Argentina, and Cameroon.

The allocation of the 12 qualified teams to their respective pools was based on the FIVB world ranking as of January 1, 2016, and through the serpentine system. The top four teams from each pool at the end of the group stage will advance to the quarterfinals.

The U.S. Women’s team is determined to make history by winning their first Olympic gold medal, following their consecutive silver medals in 2008 and 2012. Previously, they won silver in the 1984 Olympics and bronze in the 1992 Olympics.

The team has been performing exceptionally well, winning six out of their last seven tournaments, starting with the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Italy. Their journey to the 2016 Olympics was secured by claiming victory in the 2016 NORCECA Olympic Qualifier held in Lincoln, Nebraska, this past January.
