Tips For Building and Sustaining a Boys Volleyball Program

Kaizen Volleyball Club from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has achieved a significant milestone this year by offering boys teams at every age level, ranging from 12U to 18U. The club has also garnered success in the Club division at the Boys Junior National Championship, with podium finishes in 2017 and 2018. They were also the first boys team from the Oklahoma Region to qualify for the BJNC in the Open division in 2019 and have repeated this feat twice since then.

To learn more about their journey and the keys to building and sustaining a boys volleyball program, we spoke with Rachel Manriquez, the vice president of Kaizen and coach of the Boys 16 Black squad. Here are five takeaway points from our conversation:

High School + Club Volleyball: A Perfect Match (Almost)

The coaches and administrators from Kaizen and other volleyball clubs in the OKC area are currently working on establishing a boys club volleyball league in middle schools and high schools across the state. The aim is to introduce more boys to the sport and make it easily accessible through school clubs. Rachel’s role as a coach and assistant in the athletic department at Casady School, where boys volleyball is offered, provides valuable support for this initiative.

Rachel explains, “I work with these middle school boys volleyball players every day during the fall season, and it definitely gets them hooked early. Several of them have played club volleyball with us this year. The same goes for high school. Many of the kids we get have grown up playing multiple sports but start volleyball relatively late. However, during the school season, they experience exponential growth, which is incredibly exciting for them. Many of these players want to continue developing their skills and further their experience, which leads them to join a club. If more schools can involve kids at a younger age, as we have been striving to do, I believe club participation would skyrocket.”

The growing interest in boys volleyball typically results in an increase in the size and number of boys clubs. Rachel points out that similar school-based club leagues in the Dallas and Kansas City areas preceded significant growth in boys clubs. Coaches from those regions advised Kaizen, “You’ve got to get one started there.” This approach not only benefits their club but also promotes the sport across the state.

By creating opportunities for boys to participate in volleyball from a young age through school clubs, the sport becomes more accessible and appealing. This fosters a love for the game and encourages young players to continue their journey in volleyball.
