Women’s Sitting Team Aims for 1st World Title

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team is gearing up for the 2022 World ParaVolley Women’s Sitting Volleyball World Championship, where they hope to secure their first world title. The championship will take place from November 4th to November 11th in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

A Dominant Team with One Remaining Goal

Ranked as the number one team in the world and the reigning two-time Paralympic Games gold medalist, the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team has established their dominance in the sport. However, one title has eluded them – the world championship. Despite consistently winning silver medals in the last three world championships, the team is determined to take home the gold this time.

Familiar Faces and New Hope

Nine players from the current U.S. team also competed in the 2018 World Championship, including Team Captain Monique Burkland, Whitney Dosty, Tia Edwards, Heather Erickson, Kaleo Kanahele Maclay, Nicky Nieves, Lexi Shifflett-Patterson, Lora Webster, and Bethany Zummo. These players have all won at least one Paralympic gold medal. Joining them in their quest for the world title are newcomers Emma Schieck, Courtney Baker, Maddy Ball, Gia Cruz, and Sydney Satchell.

Overcoming Challenges

Due to injuries and maternity leaves, the full world championship team has had limited time to train together. However, they showcased their capabilities by winning gold at the Dutch Tournament in July, where they went undefeated with a team of 12 players. Eleven of those players are now part of the world championship roster. Head Coach Bill Hamiter remains optimistic about the team’s chances and believes they are prepared to execute at the required level to secure victory.

The Competition and Qualification

Thirteen teams will compete in the 2022 World Championships. Notably absent are the only three teams that have previously won the world championship – Netherlands, China, and Russia. The U.S. Women’s Team will be grouped with Canada, Iran, and Slovenia in the opening round. The other participating countries include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Rwanda, and Ukraine. Unlike in previous years, only the winner of the world championship will qualify for the Paralympic Games.
