Beach U21 National Team Named after U21 World Championship Trials

Six beach pairs showcased their skills at the 2021 FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball World Championship Trials in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and secured a spot on the U.S. Beach U21 National Team. The event was filled with thrilling matches and outstanding performances.

Men’s Competition

In an impressive display of talent, Caleb Kwekel and Dylan Zacca clinched the gold medal, dominating their opponents with a flawless 6-0 record. They didn’t drop a single set throughout the tournament. The dynamic Florida duo defeated Peyten Young and Eric Winn in the championship match, securing a convincing 2-0 victory (21-13, 21-14). Young and Winn earned a well-deserved silver medal after going 3-3 in the competition.

Matt Gentry and Phillip Catanzaro completed the podium, claiming the bronze medal with a commanding 2-0 win (21-14, 21-19) in the third-place contest. Despite a 3-4 record, Gentry and Catanzaro showcased their determination and skill by winning crucial matches in the playoff bracket.

Women’s Competition

On the women’s side, Lexy Denaburg and Madelyne May Anderson emerged victorious, completing a flawless bracket. The duo dominated their opponents, winning all their matches and sets. Denaburg, representing UCLA, and Anderson, hailing from Florida State, showcased their superb skills and teamwork. In the final, they defeated Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse, an impressive pair from USC, with a resounding 2-0 victory (21-10, 21-14).

Raelyn White and Caitlin Godwin secured the bronze medal after an impressive performance. They went 2-0 in pool play and won their first playoff match before falling to Nourse/Nourse in the semifinals. However, the tenacious duo from Texas and Florida rallied to defeat Lara Boos and Shae Henson with a final score of 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 15-9).

The U.S. Beach U21 National Team

All six medal-winning pairs have earned a spot on the 2021 U.S. Beach U21 National Team, showcasing the depth of talent in the U.S. beach volleyball scene. Receiving additional recognition for their outstanding performance, Kwekel/Zacca and Denaburg/Anderson have secured the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the 2021 Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship in Roi Et, Thailand, from September 24-29. In the event that the U.S. secures a second bid in each gender category, Young/Winn and Nourse/Nourse will receive the opportunity to compete. Gentry/Catanzaro and White/Godwin have been named as alternates.

Training Camp and Future Opportunities

In preparation for upcoming events, all six pairs will participate in a training camp from July 26-28 in Fort Lauderdale, alongside the Beach NDTP Summer Training Series. This valuable opportunity will allow them to hone their skills and continue to refine their teamwork.
