Beach Update: Brewster/Friend Aim for Second Consecutive NORCECA Title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2022)Tim Brewster and Kyle Friend are poised to defend their gold medal this weekend at the NORCECA Managua beach event in Nicaragua.

Last week in NORCECA Punta Cana, Brewster/Friend dominated the competition, not dropping a single set on their way to the gold medal. They defeated the Cuban duo Noslen Diaz/Jorge Luis Alayo 2-0 (21-16, 22-20) in the final, securing their first-ever NORCECA victory.

This weekend, they will be joined by two other U.S. pairs in Managua: Paul Lotman/Raffe Paulis on the men’s side and Katie Lindstrom/Teegan Van Gunst on the women’s side.

In addition to Brewster/Friend’s success, another U.S. pair, Maddie Anderson/Molly Turner, also secured a gold medal in Punta Cana. Anderson/Turner had an impressive tournament, losing only one set throughout and defeating Canadians Lea Monkhouse/Molley McBain 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) in the final.

Furthermore, Anderson/Turner already have a tournament win under their belt this year, having triumphed in the FIVB Ciro Marina Futures event in July. Turner has amassed four international medals (two FIVB, two NORCECA) in her career, showcasing her talent and experience.

Pairs Elite 16

At the FIVB Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 in Paris last weekend, three U.S. women’s pairs achieved top-10 finishes, with Betsi Flint/Kelly Cheng leading the way in fourth place.

Flint/Cheng dominated their pool and then secured a thrilling victory over World No. 1 pair Barbara/Carol (BRA) in the quarterfinals. Although they fell short in the semifinals against eventual tournament winners and World No. 2 pair Katja Stam/Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands, they displayed exceptional skills and determination.

In the bronze-medal match, Flint/Cheng narrowly lost to World No. 3 pair Duda/Ana Patricia (BRA) in a thrilling three-set battle (21-12, 13-21, 15-8).

Reflecting on the tournament, Cheng expressed her excitement and determination to continue growing and improving her game.

Another U.S. pair, Kristen Nuss/Taryn Kloth, continued their strong season on the Beach Pro Tour by tying for fifth place in Paris. Despite a hard-fought three-set loss to teammates Flint/Cheng in the pool stage, Nuss/Kloth showcased their skills and resilience. They eventually fell to the formidable duo Duda/Ana Patricia in the quarterfinals.

Emily Stockman/Megan Kraft also had a solid performance, finishing second in their pool. Although they did not advance to the final phase, Stockman/Kraft showed promise by winning two qualification matches and defeating Barbara/Carol in pool play. They finished tied for ninth overall.

On the men’s side, Miles Evans/Andy Benesh had a promising start, winning their first qualification match before falling short in the second.

Looking ahead, the next event in the Beach Pro Tour series is the Challenge event in Maldives from Oct. 13-16. The U.S. men’s entries include Troy Field/Chase Budinger, Miles Partain/Andy Benesh, Adam Roberts/Cody Caldwell, and Logan Webber/Evan Cory.
