Beach Update: From Olympics to Long Beach

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro may have come to a close, but the excitement continues in the world of beach volleyball. The FIVB World Tour is gearing up for its regular season finale, the Long Beach Grand Slam, which will take place in the United States starting on August 23rd.

The United States made a strong showing at the Olympics, with four pairs competing and bringing home a bronze medal thanks to the efforts of April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings. Now, all four U.S. Olympic pairs are preparing for another chance at a medal as they hit the sand in Long Beach, California.

The Long Beach Grand Slam, also known as the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball, will feature a full lineup of teams from multiple countries that competed at the 2016 Olympics. With 61 men’s teams and 62 women’s teams registered, it promises to be an exciting tournament.

The qualification tournament kicks off on August 23rd, with the main draw beginning on August 24th. The finals will be played on Sunday, August 28th. The event will be held on Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, providing a beautiful backdrop for the thrilling matches.

Following the Long Beach Grand Slam, the 2016 FIVB World Tour concludes in Toronto, Canada at the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals from September 13th to 18th. The top eight teams in final points for the World Tour, along with four wild card tandems for each gender, will compete for the largest purse of the year – $100,000 for the gold medal team.

The FIVB World Tour is back in action and returning to the United States for the Long Beach Grand Slam. All four American Olympic teams will be competing, along with 26 Olympic teams from other countries. The event promises to deliver thrilling matches and showcase the talent of the world’s top beach volleyball players.

In conjunction with the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball, the Junior Beach Tour West Coast Championships will also be taking place on August 25th and 26th on Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, California. This event is open to boys and girls aged 12-18 and offers a unique opportunity for young players to showcase their skills.

Late registration for the Junior Beach Tour West Coast Championships ends on August 24th at noon PT. Walk-up registrations will be accepted on a space available basis on August 25th, with checks being the only accepted form of payment.

In addition to the main events, there will also be an U17 International Exhibition on August 25th and 26th in Long Beach, California. This exhibition event was organized by USA Volleyball after the cancellation of the FIVB U17 World Championships. The winners of the U17 Team Trials held in May will represent the U.S., with the second-place finishers serving as the country’s qualification entry.
