Beach Update: Gstaad Roster, Collegiate Beach Open

USA Volleyball’s professional beach teams are gearing up for some exciting events this summer. The Gstaad 5 Star tournament in Switzerland is set to kick off on Independence Day, while the Collegiate Beach Open will take place in Huntington Beach, California. Let’s take a closer look at these upcoming events and the USA teams participating in them.

Gstaad 5 Star: Preparing for the Beach World Championships

In Switzerland, the Gstaad 5 Star tournament marks the final event with that designation in 2017. This two-week swing will help teams prepare for the highly anticipated FIVB Beach World Championships, which are scheduled to begin on July 28.

USA has a strong presence in the Gstaad tournament, with eight teams in the main draw and two teams playing in the qualification round on July 4. Among the women’s teams, Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross are the top seeds, ranked sixth. Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh have received a wild card entry after being eliminated in the country quota round last week in Croatia. On the men’s side, Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena are the top U.S. seeds, entering the tournament ranked third.

Collegiate Beach Open: Showcasing Young Talent

The USA Volleyball High Performance program will host the Collegiate Beach Open from July 6-8 in Huntington Beach, California. This event is the first of two championship events in July and serves as the premiere event for the older athletes (U21/U23) in the HP pipeline. It’s an excellent opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their skills and compete against their peers.

Junior Beach Tour: Exciting Tournaments Ahead

The Midwest and West Coast will see seven tournaments taking place this week as part of the Junior Beach Tour. With 12 tournaments left in the regular season, the competition is heating up. The season will culminate with the JBT Championships in Siesta Key, Florida, from July 20-25.

Week in Review: Porec 5-Star

In last week’s Porec 5-Star tournament, several USA teams had impressive finishes. Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes tied for 5th place, marking their second top 5 finish on the World Tour since graduating from USC in May. Casey Patterson and Theo Brunner also tied for 5th place, their second top 5 finish this season. Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb tied for 5th place for the third time in four events in 2017. Lauren Fendrick and Lane Carico had their best finish of the year, tying for 9th place. Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena had their lowest finish since May of 2016, tying for 17th place. Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross made an early exit but still achieved a respectable 17th place finish. Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day secured their sixth top 25 finish of the season, the most for a U.S. women’s team.
