Beach Update: U.S. Teams Showcase Strong Performances at 2023 Pan Am Games

The U.S. beach volleyball teams are making waves at the 2023 Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile. Corinne Quiggle and Sarah Murphy, as well as Hagen Smith and Logan Webber, have both advanced to the quarterfinals after an impressive showing in pool play.

Pool Play Dominance

Quiggle and Murphy emerged undefeated in pool play, securing their spot in the quarterfinals. Their victory over Gallay and Pereyra from Argentina with a score of 2-0 (24-22, 21-17) earned them the top position in their pool.

“We’re thrilled to be here in Santiago, playing in front of enthusiastic fans,” said Murphy. “Our game plan is on point, and we’re making necessary adjustments when needed. We owe a shoutout to Coach Fiapo! We’re excited to bring the same energy into the quarterfinals on Wednesday.”

Smith and Webber faced tough competition in the pool, but remained resilient, winning both matches that went into three sets. Their hard-fought victory against Hannibal and Llambias from Uruguay, with a score of 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-12), secured their spot in the quarterfinals.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to experience something different from our usual world tour events,” Webber expressed. “Santiago has been an incredible host, and we’re determined to keep improving with the guidance of Coach Fiapo and the entire Team USA staff!”

The beach volleyball competition at the Pan Am Games will continue from October 21st to 27th.

Success at Challenge Goa

Before the Pan Am Games, U.S. teams also had a commendable performance at Challenge Goa in India. Three pairs made it out of the pools and into the elimination rounds.

Tri Bourne and Chaim Schalk advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Seiser and Grössig from Austria with a score of 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-10). Unfortunately, they faced Seidl and Pristauz from Austria in the quarterfinals and were defeated with a score of 2-0 (23-21, 21-17). Bourne and Schalk finished tied for fifth place.

Miles Evans and Chase Budinger faced tough opposition in the Round of 16 and were defeated by Herrera and Gavira from Spain with a score of 2-0 (21-17, 21-12). They finished tied for ninth place.

Kim Hildreth and Teegan Van Gunst also finished tied for ninth place after losing to Ittlinger and Borger from Germany in the Round of 16 with a score of 2-0 (18-21, 32-34).

Upcoming BPT Futures – Mallorca

Next on the calendar is the BPT Futures Mallorca, which is an exclusive men’s event taking place in Spain from October 25th to 29th. Representing the U.S. will be Jake Urrutia and Wyatt Harrison, who will compete in the qualification stage of the tournament.

Following this event, the final BPT Futures event of the year will be held in Geelong, Australia on November 22nd.

World Rankings

The world rankings in beach volleyball have seen minimal changes following the 2023 Beach World Championships, although some variation occurred within the top 20.

In the women’s rankings, Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, who became world champions, currently hold the second position with 8,320 points. Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss, the bronze medalists in Tlaxcala, rank third with 8,140 points. Both teams are still chasing after the top-ranked Ana Patricia and Duda from Brazil, who have 9,540 points.

Julia Scoles and Betsi Flint occupy the ninth position with 6,200 points.

Among the men, Miles Partain and Andy Benesh rank third with 7,100 points, while Anders Mol and Christian Sorum from Norway hold the top spot with 9,100 points.

Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner, who finished in fourth place in Tlaxcala, currently hold the twentieth position with 5,040 points.

With their performance in Goa, Tri Bourne and Chaim Schalk have climbed to the ninth position in the Provisional Olympic Rankings, trailing Tr. Crabb and Brunner by only 140 points.
