BNT Gets Early Test at Rosarito Elite 16

ROSARITO, Mexico (March 22, 2022) – Get ready for an exciting weekend as the U.S. Beach National Team takes on the challenge of the Beach Pro Tour’s Elite 16 event in Rosarito, Mexico. With an impressive lineup of eight pairs, including five women’s and three men’s teams, this tournament is set to be a star-studded affair.

Women’s Main Draw

Leading the way in the women’s main draw are some familiar faces. Kelly (Claes) Cheng and Betsi Flint, Terese Cannon and Sarah Sponcil, as well as Emily Day and April Ross, will be showcasing their skills on the sand. Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske, along with Lauren Fendrick and Emily Stockman, will have to participate in the qualifier to secure their spots in the main draw. The qualifier is a 16-team, two-round competition where only four berths are available.

Men’s Main Draw

In the men’s main draw, Trevor Crabb and Tri Bourne will be representing the U.S. Beach National Team. Chaim Schalk and Theo Brunner, as well as Chase Budinger and Troy Field, will try to join them by competing in the qualifier.

Tournament Schedule

The action kicks off on Wednesday, March 23, with the qualification rounds. The main draw matches begin on Thursday, March 24, and will culminate with the medal matches on Sunday, March 27.

Elite 16 Tournaments

The Elite 16 tournaments are the highest level of competition on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. The top 12 ranked teams in the world receive automatic entry into the main draw, and an additional four teams qualify to complete the 16-team field. Once in the main draw, the teams are divided into pools of four. After a round-robin format, the top two teams from each pool will proceed to a single-elimination bracket to compete for the title.

Star-Studded Lineup

This tournament boasts an impressive lineup of athletes, including five out of the six women’s medalists from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. April Ross, who won gold with Alix Klineman, will be among the competitors, along with silver medalists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar from Australia, and bronze medalists Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich from Switzerland. Nine out of the 12 main draw teams have at least one Olympian from the summer games.

On the men’s side, the gold medalists from Tokyo 2020, Christian Sorum and Anders Mol from Norway, will be leading the pack. Also in the mix are the bronze medalists Cherif Younousee and Ahmed Tijan from Qatar. Like the women’s teams, nine out of the 12 main draw teams feature athletes who competed in the 2020 Olympics.

Season Debuts and Top Finishes

This weekend will mark the season debuts of Kelly Cheng and Betsi Flint, as well as Trevor Crabb and Tri Bourne. The other pairs already showcased their skills at the Tlaxcala Challenge last week. Emily Day and April Ross had the highest American finish, tying for fifth place. Chaim Schalk and Theo Brunner, Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske, and Lauren Fendrick and Emily Stockman also had strong showings, finishing in the top 10.
