Hydrate for Peak Court Performance

Staying hydrated is crucial for optimal performance on the court. But how do you know if you’re getting enough to drink? Is there a way to gauge your hydration levels? Absolutely! By completing a hydration assessment, you can determine if you’re hydrating effectively.

Complete a hydration assessment for yourself

To assess your hydration levels, start by keeping track of the amount of water you consume throughout the day and during practice. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose a water bottle that you will drink from throughout the day and during practice. Take note of how much water it holds.
  2. Place several rubber bands around the base of your water bottle.
  3. Every time you refill the bottle, move a rubber band to the top.
  4. Do some math! For example, if you drink and fill a 32-ounce water bottle three times in a day, you’ve consumed 96 ounces of water.
  5. Check your urine! Both the color and frequency of urination can give you insights into your hydration status.
  • If you find that you urinate infrequently (with longer than four hours between bathroom stops) and your urine is dark yellow in color, you may not be drinking enough and could be dehydrated.
  • On the other hand, if you frequently urinate (more than once an hour) and your urine is clear, you may be overhydrating.

By considering your water consumption, urine color, and pee frequency, you can determine if you are drinking enough water to stay properly hydrated. If you consistently fall into the infrequent and dark-colored pee category, try adding 1-2 cups of water during meal times.

Remember, the goal is not to drink as much water as possible. Find the right balance between dehydration and overhydration, and maintain those habits daily.

Increasing your fluid intake

There are a few simple ways to increase your fluid intake:

  • “Spice” up your water by adding slices of citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, or limes to your water bottle for added flavor.
  • Make a smoothie using fruits and vegetables, which are naturally rich in water. A smoothie or a piece of fruit can be a refreshing snack between matches or during practice, helping you stay hydrated.
  • Keep a water bottle with you at all times to ensure you have easy access to water throughout the day.

Beach volleyball tips

If you’re participating in an all-day tournament or playing beach volleyball, here are some additional tips to stay hydrated and perform at your best:

  • Pack enough water to last the entire day.
  • Invest in an insulated water bottle to keep your drink cool.
  • Snack on fruits between matches to replenish energy and increase hydration levels.

Managing hot and humid outdoor temperatures

When playing in hot and humid outdoor conditions, consider the following tips:

  • Blend ice and water or ice with a sports drink to create a slushie-like consistency. Pour it into an insulated water bottle and sip on it before and between matches to stay cool.
