New Team, Same Goal for U.S. Men at VNL

The U.S. Men’s National Team is gearing up for the first round of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in Brasilia, Brazil. Head Coach John Speraw and his staff have carefully selected a team of 14 players from a long list of 25 talented individuals to compete in this tournament.

Among the roster are four Olympians, including middle blocker David Smith, outside hitters Aaron Russell and Thomas Jaeschke, and opposite Kyle Ensing. Additionally, the team boasts four players with previous VNL experience: middle Jeff Jendryk, opposite Jake Hanes, libero Kyle Dagostino, and setter Josh Tuaniga. Making their debut in the VNL roster are setter James Shaw, middles Patrick Gasman and Tyler Mitchem, outside hitters Cody Kessel and Jacob Pasteur, and libero Mason Briggs.

This year, there will be a new face on the team’s coaching staff, Argentine Olympian and longtime pro club coach Javier Weber, who will serve as a second assistant for Head Coach Speraw. With a focus on evaluating young talent, Speraw remains committed to the team’s ultimate goal of medaling at the VNL.

The FIVB recently announced that a team’s world ranking could potentially impact its qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Knowing the significance of a strong performance in the VNL, Speraw and his staff are strategizing on how to handle these events moving forward.
