Qualified! Men’s U21 Team Earns Ticket to Worlds and Pan Am Cup Finals

The U.S. Men’s U21 National Team has achieved great success in their journey towards the 2023 FIVB World Championship and the finals of the Pan American Cup. In a thrilling match against Cuba, the U.S. Men emerged victorious with a 3-2 win (25-21, 25-14, 20-25, 24-26, 16-14) in Havana. This victory secured their qualification for both prestigious tournaments.

The U.S. Men (4-0) will now face Mexico (4-1) in the gold medal match scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PT. These two teams secured their World Championship berths as the top two finishing NORCECA teams. It is worth noting that the U.S. Men had previously defeated Mexico 3-2 in their opening match.

During the match, Cuba led in attacks with 51, while the U.S. Men excelled in blocks with 15 and aces with 8. The United States capitalized on Cuba’s errors, scoring 37 points, while conceding 33.

One standout performer in the match was U.S. setter and team captain Andrew Rowan, who scored eight points, including a match-high seven aces and one block. His exceptional performance contributed to the U.S. team’s hitting efficiency of .296.

Reflecting on the match, Rowan expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Obviously (the match) was great, super competitive. It was a five-set match, and we came out with a win. I think Cuba is a very physical team. They had some great swings, some great blocks, some great serves, and we did too. It was a great matchup.”

Zach Rama, the U.S. team’s outside hitter, led the scoring with 16 points, followed by opposite Shane Wetzel and outside hitter Noah Roberts, who each scored 11 points. Middle blockers Wesley Smith and Nyherowo Omene also made significant contributions with 11 points each.

Defensively, libero Christopher Connelly showcased his skills with 12 digs and six excellent receptions, while Rama led the team in excellent receptions with 12.
