Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb Clinch Olympic Berth

The U.S. beach volleyball team of Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb has officially secured their spot at the Tokyo Olympic Games, set to take place from July 23 to August 8. This achievement comes after Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena exited the ongoing four-star tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic during pool play.

Crabb and Gibb are currently tied with Dalhausser and Lucena in the Olympic Rankings, both teams having accumulated 7,040 points. However, Crabb and Gibb hold the advantage in a tiebreaker situation due to their higher point total from the Olympic Qualification process, which began in 2018.

Since September 2018, Crabb and Gibb have competed in 19 tournaments, earning a total of 9,300 Olympic Ranking points. This outstanding performance places them ahead of any other American men’s pair. According to FIVB guidelines, cumulative Olympic ranking points act as the first tiebreaker when determining Olympic nominations. With their higher point total, Crabb and Gibb have mathematically secured one of the two Olympic berths.

Throughout the qualification period, Crabb and Gibb achieved top-five finishes in eight FIVB events and secured two medals. They triumphed in a four-star tournament in Chetamul, Mexico in 2019 and won bronze in Doha earlier this year.

This will be Jake Gibb’s fourth Olympic Games, having made his debut in 2008 with partner Sean Rosenthal. He also competed in London 2012 and teamed up with Casey Patterson in Rio 2016. Gibb’s best Olympic finish so far has been fifth place, a remarkable achievement he reached on two occasions.

At 45 years old, Gibb will become the oldest volleyball Olympian, both in beach and indoor volleyball, in history.

On the other hand, Taylor Crabb, 29, will be making his Olympic debut. He has been competing on the FIVB World Tour since 2015, showcasing his skills and dedication to the sport.

While Crabb and Gibb celebrate their Olympic qualification, the race for the second and final men’s Olympic berth is still ongoing between Phil Dalhausser/Lucena and Tri Bourne/Trevor Crabb. Dalhausser/Lucena currently hold the advantage, but if Bourne/Crabb manage to win the ongoing Ostrava tournament, they will secure the spot.

In terms of the United States’ women’s beach volleyball teams, Alix Klineman/April Ross and Kelly Claes/Sarah Sponcil have already secured their Olympic berths.

The J&T Banka Ostrava Beach Open, where all these teams are competing, will conclude on Sunday, June 6.
