Three American Squads Undefeated on Main Draw Day One

ROSARITO, Mexico (March 24, 2022) – The Beach Pro Tour’s Rosarito Elite 16 kicked off with an exhilarating main draw, following a challenging international qualifier the day before. As the competition unfolded, three American squads stood out, winning all their pool play matches.

In an impressive display, four U.S. Beach National Team pairs – Kelly (Claes) Cheng/Betsi Flint, Emily Day/April Ross, Kelley Kolinske/Sara Hughes, and Tri Bourne/Trevor Crabb – dominated the court on Thursday. Cheng and Flint secured an advancing spot out of pool C by winning twice, including a sweep against Tokyo 2020 bronze medalists Anouk Verge-Depre/Joana Heidrich and a 2-0 victory over Brazilians Fernanda Alves/Maria Elisa Mendes Ticon Antonelli. They will now face Brazil’s Talita Da Rocha Antunes/Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva for the pool title on Friday at 2 p.m. Pacific.

Day/April and Kolinske/Hughes also emerged victorious in their respective matches. Day/April staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Nina Brunner/Tanja Huberli of Switzerland, while Hughes/Kolinske swept fellow Americans Terese Cannon/Sarah Sponcil. All four teams, competing in pool B, will conclude the round-robin phase with two matches on Friday.

Bourne/Crabb, representing the U.S. in the men’s pool B, achieved a 1-1 record after two matches on Thursday. They faced initial defeat against reigning Olympic gold medalists Anders Mol/Christian Sorum of Norway but quickly rebounded with a comprehensive two-set win against Samuele Cottafava/Paolo Nicolai of Italy.
