Twelve Chosen for Boys Youth National Team

USA Volleyball is proud to announce the selection of the 12 players and four alternates for the 2016 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team (BYNT). These talented athletes will be representing the country at the NORCECA Boys’ Under-19 Continental Championship in Havana, Cuba from June 24th to 29th, with the hope of qualifying for the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship.

According to Head Coach Sam Shweisky, the tryout experience was incredibly intense and exciting, with the players showcasing high levels of competition and determination. The team was selected based on their athleticism, volleyball IQ, and mental toughness, ensuring a well-balanced and complementary roster.

The Squad

The chosen team is comprised of talented players in various positions. The outside hitters include Brandon Browning (Corona del Mar, Calif.), Jaylen Jasper (Arnold, Md.), Devin Joslyn (Angola, N.Y.), J.P. Reilly (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Sean Ryan (Countryside, Ill.), and Joel Schneidmiller (Saratoga, Calif.).

In the middle blocker position, we have Sam Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.), Kyler Presho (San Clemente, Calif.), and Jack Mathews (Tustin, Calif.). Chris Hall (Alhambra, Calif.) and Kyle Merchen (Clovis, Calif.) will be the setters, while Cole Paxson (Costa Mesa, Calif.) will be the libero.

Alternates

The four alternates chosen for the team are outside hitter Chris McBee (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), middle blocker Canyon Tuman (Sewickley, Pa.), setter Eli Irizarry (Moraga, Calif.), and libero Thomas Nelson (San Ramon, Calif.). These players will be ready to step in if needed, providing valuable depth to the team.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach Sam Shweisky will be assisted by UCLA assistant men’s coach Brad Keller, who will serve as the BYNT’s associate head coach. Theo Edwards, the assistant men’s coach at Cal State Northridge, will be an assistant for Shweisky and Keller. Kevin Burch, an assistant coach at Ohio State, will serve as the technical coordinator. The team will be led by Team Manager Collin Powers and supervised by Team Doctor Dr. Priscilla Tu.

Tournament Details

The United States, as the defending champion, will be competing against teams from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua in the opening pool. The second pool will consist of Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, Jamaica, and Mexico. The tournament will feature pool play, quarterfinals, semifinals, classification matches, and finals, taking place from June 24th to 29th.
