USA Volleyball Offers Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge in September at Stevenson University

USA Volleyball is excited to announce the upcoming men’s collegiate beach tournament, in collaboration with Stevenson University, taking place on September 11-12 in Owings Mills, Maryland. This event is a part of USAV’s National Team Development Program (NTDP) and will provide a platform for 16 pairs of male athletes to showcase their skills.

To identify the participants, USA Volleyball will be utilizing its Scouting Network. This opportunity allows talented athletes to compete and potentially earn an invitation to future NTDP programming. The importance of providing high-quality competitive opportunities for collegiate athletes cannot be overstated, as it contributes to the long-term success of our National Team programs.

Peter Vint, USA Volleyball’s chief of sport, emphasizes the positive impact that women’s collegiate beach programs have had and acknowledges the significance of supporting the Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge. The addition of this event represents a crucial step forward for the men’s game.

Stevenson University, under the leadership of athletics director Brett Adams, has been a pioneer in beach volleyball. In 2016, they became the first Division III school on the East Coast to add a varsity women’s beach team. Adams’ vision and dedication to the sport led to the construction of a lighted complex with four courts near the campus edge. Additionally, he hired Olympic gold medalist and former national team coach Aldis Berzins to lead the men’s indoor volleyball team, with the ultimate goal of establishing a men’s beach program.

As the Tokyo Olympics approach, Adams recognizes the importance of creating opportunities and pathways for young men to join the national program. The Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge provides a platform for these aspiring athletes to compete at the highest level.

To ensure the success of this event, Stevenson University and USA Volleyball are partnering with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Together, they aim to inform men’s volleyball coaches about the Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge, focusing on the benefits and opportunities it offers for their players. NCAA bylaws allow exemptions from playing and practice seasons for USA National Team Development Programs, making current or recent graduate student-athletes eligible to participate.

Kathy DeBoer, the Executive Director of AVCA, recognizes the impact that college beach volleyball has had on the women’s pipeline. Thanks to the collaboration between USA Volleyball and Brett Adams at Stevenson University, a similar path is now being built for men.

Teams participating in the Men’s Beach Collegiate Challenge must register as a team, but they do not need to be from the same school. The competition will consist of 10 teams in the main draw, two wild cards (with one going to the host school), and four teams from a qualifier on September 10. The registration fee is $200 per team, plus additional fees. Please note that participants or their schools are responsible for covering travel and lodging expenses.
