Viggo O. Nelson National Communications Awards – USA Volleyball

Named in honor of Viggo O. Nelson, the third president of USA Volleyball (1955-1959), the Viggo O. Nelson National Communications Awards celebrates excellence in volleyball publications, aiming to inspire others to develop high-quality publications. Administered by the USAV staff, this award recognizes organizations that have achieved outstanding accomplishments in the field.

Commission and Criteria

The commission behind the Viggo O. Nelson National Communications Awards is to not only acknowledge exceptional volleyball publications but also motivate others to strive for the same level of excellence. The key criteria for evaluation include various aspects of publications, such as Regional Volleyball Association (RVA) websites, aesthetically pleasing layouts, seamless flow from one page to another, logical use of white space and color, and creative incorporation of graphics to complement the text.

Editorial content plays a crucial role, requiring up-to-date information, coverage of a wide range of issues, inclusion of pertinent regional information, ease of reference, and grammatical/mechanical accuracy. Overall presentation encompasses the combination of graphic presentation and editorial content, assessed based on content and accuracy (70%), ease of reference (20%), and aesthetic impression (10%).

Competition Areas

The Viggo O. Nelson National Communications Awards focuses on two major areas of competition:

  1. USAV Regional Volleyball Association (RVA) Publications: This category includes newsletters, handbooks, and websites of RVA.
  2. Collegiate Media Guides
