Four Teams to Represent USAV at World Tour Finals

The FIVB has announced the Wild Card selections for the 2017 World Tour Finals, and the U.S. has secured two more teams for the season-ending beach volleyball tournament. These Wild Card selections include April Ross/Lauren Fendrick and Casey Patterson/Theo Brunner. They will be joining Brooke Sweat/Summer Ross and Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena at the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals, set to take place in Hamburg, Germany from August 23-27.

USA’s Strong Presence

With these Wild Card entries, the U.S. has now reached the maximum representation of two teams per gender in the tournament. Dalhausser/Lucena and Sweat/S. Ross had already earned their spots in the competition through their impressive performance in the World Rankings.

Similarly, the complete women’s field consists of Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda Lisboa (BRA), Larissa Franca/Talita Antunes (BRA), Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Paredes (CAN), Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson (CAN), Wild Card Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova (CZE), Kristyna Kolocova/Michala Kvapilova (CZE), Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst (GER), Wild Card Julia Sude/Chantal Laboureur (GER), Joana Heidrich/Anouk Verge-Depre (SUI), Nina Betschart/Tanja Huberli (SUI), Brooke Sweat/Summer Ross (USA), and April Ross/Lauren Fendrick (USA Wild Card).

Tournament Format

The tournament will feature twelve teams per gender, with pool play divided into groups of three starting on August 23. All teams will then advance to the single-elimination bracket. The women’s quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on August 25, followed by the finals on Saturday, August 26. The men’s quarterfinals will take place on the 26th, while the semifinals and finals are scheduled for August 27.

USA’s Track Record at World Tour Finals

The U.S. has a strong history at the World Tour Finals. In 2016, John Hyden/Tri Bourne secured bronze, Dalhausser/Lucena and Kerri Walsh Jennings/A. Ross tied for fifth place. In the inaugural year of the tournament in 2015, USA had two men’s and women’s teams. Dalhausser/Lucena won silver, Fendrick/A. Ross tied for fifth, Jennifer Kessy/Emily Day finished seventh, and Jake Gibb/Patterson also finished in seventh place.
