WJNT Sweeps Host Mexico with Impressive Performance

The U.S. Women’s Junior National Team (WJNT) achieved a much-needed victory on Saturday night, defeating host country Mexico 3-0 in a Pool A match at the 2019 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in Aguascalientes.

“We had to win today, it was a must-win,” said WJNT head coach Jerritt Elliott. “We need to be strategic in our gameplay. Although we faced some ups and downs tonight, the team fought together and made some great adjustments to our block. I’m really pleased with our performance.”

WJNT showcased exceptional skills throughout the match, securing victory with late runs in all three sets. In the first set, they scored seven consecutive points for a 23-16 lead, ultimately winning the set 25-17. In the second set, a 6-2 run gave the U.S. a comfortable lead, allowing them to withstand a late rally from Mexico. In the third set, the U.S. seized six of the final seven points to complete the sweep.

The U.S. dominated the match with their powerful attacks, recording 46 kills on 78 attempts and boasting a remarkable .590 scoring percentage. Outside hitter Jenna Wenaas stood out with 18 points on just 29 swings, while opposite hitter Kendall Kipp contributed 12 points, including nine from attacks and three from blocks. Logan Eggleston, Heather Gneiting, Molly Phillips, and Anna Dixon also made significant contributions to the team’s success.

Kipp led the team in blocks with three, and Gneiting scored three points from her impressive serves.

The match experienced a delay of nearly three hours due to heavy rains in the area, which caused a suspension during the Brazil versus Japan match. Once that match resumed, the U.S. and Mexico had to wait for Japan to finish their three-set victory before they could take to the court.

With this win, the U.S. team now holds a 1-1 record in the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship, placing second in Pool A. Italy is currently in first place with a 2-0 record, while Mexico drops to third. Cuba is in fourth place with a 0-2 record.

The U.S. team will conclude the first round of pool play with a crucial match against Cuba on Sunday, July 14, at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time.

“Tomorrow’s match is another must-win against a highly physical team,” said Elliott. “Cuba brings a lot of physicality and exceptional athletes. We’re excited to face them as they are truly some of the best athletes in the world.”
