Women’s Sitting Team, Zummo Race to Pool Win

Paralympian Bethany Zummo faced another setback just as she had recovered from a previous injury. However, the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team is familiar with overcoming challenges and getting back in the game. In their latest match at the Sitting Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands, Zummo and her team defeated Japan with a commanding performance of 25-14, 25-13, 25-12, finishing the pool play with a perfect record of 3-0.

Zummo showcased her skills with eight receptions, maintaining an impressive 88 percent positive rate. Monique Burkland, the team’s outside hitter, led the scoring with 15 points, including 11 kills, three blocks, and one ace. Lora Webster contributed with four blocks, while Lexi Shifflett served four aces. The U.S. Women dominated in key areas like kills, blocks, and aces.

Up next, the team will head to Rotterdam to face Ukraine in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 5 a.m. ET. Despite her recent concussion and the previous hip injury, Zummo expressed gratitude for her supportive team and her eagerness to compete again.

Zummo’s journey has been marked by resilience, having started with the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team before the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Since then, she has won a silver medal and a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. While the team has achieved success on various stages, the World Championships title still remains unclaimed.
