Women’s Sports Foundation awards U.S. Women’s Sitting $5K grant

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team has received a significant boost in their mission to grow the sport and become the top team in the world. The Women’s Sports Foundation has awarded them a $5,000 grant along with a year’s supply of Gatorade products to support their endeavors. This grant will not only benefit the team now but also help them achieve sustained competitive excellence in the future.

The grant comes from the Travel & Training Fund, which aims to provide financial assistance to female athletes and women’s sports teams, alleviating the burden of travel expenses, training costs, and supplies. The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team plans to utilize the funds to bring new athletes to the program’s A2 training camps.

The A2 program is designed for individuals who have been identified as potential national team athletes but need to learn or improve their sitting volleyball skills. Previously, about 10 members of the national team had participated in the A2 training program.

Elliot Blake, the Program Coordinator, expressed gratitude for the grant, as it will enable them to provide a 50% reimbursement for the athletes’ travel expenses to attend camps. This financial support will significantly ease the financial strain on these dedicated athletes, allowing them to focus on their growth within the game.

In addition to the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team, the Women’s Sports Foundation awarded grants to 30 individual athletes and three women’s teams, totaling $127,500. These recipients represent 19 different sports across 22 states. Among the recipients are athletes aspiring to compete in the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, including Paralympic shooter Tammy Delano and wheelchair basketball player Desiree Miller.

The CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation, Deborah Slaner Larkin, highlighted the financial burden faced by athletes and their families when preparing for competitive events. She expressed the Foundation’s delight in being able to provide much-needed financial support through the Travel & Training Fund, allowing female athletes to focus on reaching their full potential.

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team is currently ranked second in the world and has their sights set on winning their first Paralympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro this September. China, the top-ranked team, has won the gold medal in both the 2008 and 2012 Paralympics. The 2016 Paralympics will take place from September 7th to September 18th.
