An Unforgettable Journey in the High Performance Officials Pipeline

My experience as a part of the High Performance Officials Pipeline (HPOP) during the 2019 High Performance Championships was nothing short of amazing. From the coaches’ guidance to the electric atmosphere and the camaraderie among the officials, it was an experience that will forever be etched in my memory.

A Surprising Start

One moment that stands out vividly is when I had to halt a match midway on the first day due to a water main break that brought the entire city to a standstill. As a 23-year-old official, this was a completely new experience for me. I had never encountered such a situation in my playing career or officiating journey. Despite the unexpected turn of events, it turned out to be a fun night as it gave me the opportunity to meet and interact with other officials, bonding over our shared rookie status in the HPOP.

Learning from the Best

The cadre of officials and mentors surpassed all my expectations. It was a privilege to work alongside exceptional officials from both USAV and FIVB. Their expertise and guidance were invaluable in my growth as an official. What struck me the most was the supportive and nurturing nature of the USAV officiating community. Instead of a cutthroat environment, there was a strong emphasis on continuous learning and personal growth. I constantly received constructive feedback that I could apply in my subsequent matches. And on occasions when I had the chance to use headsets, receiving immediate feedback from my partner or the assigned coach/mentor further enhanced my officiating skills.

A Community of Learning

Working with different individuals within the referee community has always been a source of enlightenment for me. Each person I collaborate with brings a unique perspective, allowing me to broaden my knowledge and deepen my understanding of what it takes to be a great official.

Dedicated Coach/Mentors

The coach/mentors at the event went above and beyond to support those in need. While some provided feedback from the sidelines, there were those like Pati Rolf who stood directly behind us as R2, ensuring that we performed our duties flawlessly. Pati’s presence and guidance left a lasting impression, and I will always cherish the image of her tirelessly moving from court to court, ensuring that we not only did our job well but also looked good doing it.

A Journey of Growth

My time at the High Performance Championships was truly transformative. I had the pleasure of meeting countless new and remarkable individuals, rekindling old connections, and experiencing personal growth both on and off the court. Being a part of the High Performance Officials Pipeline has allowed me to evolve not just as an official but also as an individual.
