TED March Teaching Madness

Technology Education Design has released a collection of insightful clips this month that are essential for anyone involved in our sport. These videos will not only make you a better teacher but also provide you with the motivation to continue the important work you do. Covering three different areas of knowledge, each video is a valuable resource that every sports leader should watch.

The Importance of Play

One aspect that I feel strongly about is the idea of teaching the game through the game itself. During a recent coaching clinic in Iowa, where I had the privilege of working alongside Mary Wise from Florida and other esteemed teachers, I shared an analogy that resonated with many coaches. I asked them to think back to when they first learned to ride a bike. It’s a skill that carries risks, yet most of us learned it without the need for a bike riding coach, drills, or specialized camps. We were able to ride effortlessly even after years of not riding at all.

This concept of play-based learning is one that I have explored in-depth through my work with the National Institute for Play. Gary Avicious, the founder of the Coaching School, shares this belief and has dedicated himself to promoting the importance of play in every child’s life. Stuart Brown, the CEO of the National Institute for Play, recently gave an inspiring TED talk on the significance of play, highlighting the extensive research conducted on this topic over the years.

Wooden Wisdom

If you’ve ever been to my office, you might have noticed the prominent signed poster of John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, along with a collection of books about Coach Wooden. I hold him in high regard and credit him for the success of the USA Men’s team. Marv Dunphy’s Ph.D. thesis on Coach Wooden served as the foundation for my first IMPACT Manual back in 1988. When asked to summarize his findings, Marv didn’t need more than two words: “Be consistent.” This lesson has had a profound impact on me and has shaped my approach to coaching and leading a team.

For those who may not be familiar with Coach Wooden’s teaching prowess, this TED talk will provide a glimpse into the mind of a legendary coach. His thoughts on success are both inspiring and insightful.

Passion and Shining Eyes

While exploring TED, I came across another fantastic clip shared by our dedicated CAP staffer, Andy Pai. This video focuses on the parallels between growing music and coaching, and it offers valuable lessons for all of us involved in our sport. As leaders, it’s essential to reflect on the characteristics we embody and strive to be the kind of coach who ignites a passion in our players. Benjamin Zander, the speaker in the video, is incredibly charismatic and energizing to watch. His words serve as a reminder of the power and beauty that can be created when we inspire our athletes.

These three TED talks are absolute home runs, and I strongly encourage you all to watch them. They feature three exceptional teachers who will undoubtedly have a positive impact on your coaching journey. Take some time to explore the vast library of TED talks, including Sir Kenneth Robinson’s talk on the importance of creativity. As always, I appreciate your dedication to coaching, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these videos.
