Leave a Ball Behind II

Over a decade ago, USA Volleyball initiated a groundbreaking program in collaboration with regional organizations and clubs. The aim was to give back to less fortunate programs around the world by donating used volleyballs at the end of each season. This idea was born when a team in Africa gifted a ball made from banana leaves, serving as a reminder of how much we often take for granted.

Throughout the years, numerous programs have generously donated thousands of used volleyballs to USA Volleyball. These balls, while no longer required by their original owners, are still in good enough condition to be used effectively. In a heartwarming gesture, teams participating in Nationals are provided with Sharpie pens to write good luck wishes or favorite quotes on the balls they donate. After the matches, the officials collect these balls, deflate them, and gather them for the program. Additionally, regions also contribute lost balls to their own Leave a Ball Behind program or ship them to USA Volleyball.

To alleviate the increasing cost of luggage, which now stands at $50 round trip for a ball bag on airlines, USA Volleyball has taken steps to provide balls at Nationals. This measure reduces the number of balls received from Nationals. However, any used balls in good condition, especially those signed by players with good luck wishes, are always welcome from any club.

Furthermore, the Sport Development department collaborates with the US Olympic Committee to train sponsors, businesses, and sporting groups in the Paralympic sport of sitting volleyball. Sitting volleyball is a fun, easy-to-play sport that offers a unique perspective and promotes inclusivity. In Holland, for example, over 3,000 members participate in their sitting program, with 80 percent of them being able-bodied individuals who choose to play the game sitting down.

In recent news, USA Volleyball has traded hard, rubber volleyballs with the USOC for new Molten USAV Red white/blue volleyballs and Filastecs. The USOC volleyballs will be sent to Africa. The University of Alabama Sports Medicine department also had the opportunity to participate in sitting volleyball and were the last group to use the white volleyballs.

We invite you to consider donating to our program. Even a single ball can make a significant difference to the program that receives it.
