USAV Gearing Up for Year 2 in Beach ParaVolley

USA Volleyball is excited to enter its second season as the official national federation for beach ParaVolley, a rapidly growing sport.

The Inclusive Nature of Beach ParaVolley

Beach ParaVolley is a unique variant of standing beach volleyball that promotes inclusivity within the Paralympic classification system. Played with three-member teams, this sport welcomes athletes of all abilities.

Beach Volleyball

Successful Debut in 2019

In 2019, USA Volleyball made a memorable entry into beach ParaVolley, thanks to the leadership of Michelle Goodall, the Beach ParaVolley Program Administrator, and coaches Dan Mickle and Jon Aharoni. USA Volleyball hosted four beach ParaVolley camps and one pre-tournament training camp, providing opportunities for 19 dedicated athletes. The hard work paid off when USA Volleyball secured the gold medal in the men’s division and the silver medal in the women’s division at the 2019 Pingtan Beach World Series Open event in Pingtan, China.

Preparing for the Future

USA Volleyball is committed to growing the beach ParaVolley program to ensure a strong presence in the anticipated inclusion of beach ParaVolley in the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. With the support of World ParaVolley and the International Paralympic Committee, USA Volleyball is actively expanding its pipeline of athletes. The sport has gained popularity in Asia/Oceania since 2007, and USA Volleyball aims to tap into this growing trend.

Michelle Goodall mentioned, “We achieved significant milestones in our first year as the national federation for beach ParaVolley. Our focus now is to further develop our athlete pipeline through training and competitions, collaborating closely with World ParaVolley. While the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics may seem far away, we want to be fully immersed in the sport if beach ParaVolley is added to the Paralympics program. It’s thrilling to see new clubs and organizations embrace beach ParaVolley, creating an avenue for athletes to be part of this exciting sport right from its early stages.”

Looking Ahead to 2020

USA Volleyball is currently finalizing its beach ParaVolley training camp schedule for 2020. These camps, along with demonstrations at various beach volleyball events, will provide opportunities to introduce the sport to new audiences. With up to four international events expected this year, USA Volleyball’s participation in beach ParaVolley will continue to grow.

The 2020 camp schedule and online registration will be announced in the coming week.
