Minneapolis has become a hub for youth volleyball and aspiring athletes of the U.S. Women’s National Team. The 38th Annual USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships (GJNC) is currently taking place at the Minneapolis Convention Center from June 25 to July 4. With an estimated 13,000 players, 3,000 coaches, referees, and support staff, and 30,000 family and friends in attendance, this prestigious event is drawing significant attention.
In addition to the GJNC, the U.S. Collegiate National Team – Minneapolis (CNT-Minneapolis) program is competing in round-robin action alongside the juniors. This program serves as a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team and also provides the college stars an opportunity to serve as role models for the younger generation.

Brittany McLean, a rising sophomore at the University of Minnesota and a member of the CNT-Minneapolis program, is thrilled to give back to the younger athletes competing in the GJNC and be a role model. Having participated in the Junior National Championships herself, McLean fondly remembers the impact it had on her. She says, “We just got to make sure that we are good role models for everyone. It is a cool feeling for sure. I sure hope that these girls one day are in the spot that we are in now.”
McLean, who played for the Northern Lights Volleyball Club based in Burnsville, Minnesota, has been a part of the USAV Girls’ Junior National Championships since she was 14 years old. She even competed at the event in 2014 when it was last held at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Reflecting on her experience, she says, “Having the home court advantage definitely was better than traveling. We got to sleep in our own beds, which is really nice. We got third that year, so all that helped out with our performance.”

Impressing the U.S. Women’s National Team staff at the March open tryouts, McLean secured a spot on the Collegiate National Team. She describes her freshman season at Minnesota as “absolutely amazing,” and now she has the opportunity to represent her school and wear the Red, White, and Blue. Her first match will take place on Wednesday at 5 p.m. on Court 19 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. McLean is excited to have her Minnesota teammates and friends watch her in action.
The CNT-Minneapolis program, a part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline, trained at the University of Minnesota from June 22-26 before competing at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This program not only showcases the talent of college athletes but also provides a platform for them to hone their skills and potentially earn a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Team.
