Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy: Empowering Youth Through Volleyball

In today’s world, diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential values that organizations must uphold. USA Volleyball, in partnership with Starlings Volleyball, USA, is committed to creating a welcoming environment for everyone involved in the sport. In this article, we will explore the inspiring story of how Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy became one of Starlings’ most recent Sister Clubs, working together to improve diversity and inclusion efforts in volleyball.

A Chance Meeting and Shared Vision

Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy’s journey with Starlings Volleyball began in 2018 at the AVCA convention. Steve Sack, the co-club owner of Michigan Elite, found himself sitting next to Lucy Jones, the executive director of Starlings Volleyball. As they struck up a conversation, they discovered that their organizations shared a common goal and vision.

Impacting Lives through Volleyball

The first part of our series highlighted Starling’s mission to positively impact the lives of at-risk girls through volleyball. Michigan Elite, too, believes in making a difference in their community. The club has previously partnered with the Detroit Police Athletic League, providing free entrance to tournaments. Additionally, Michigan Elite members have devoted their time to teaching volleyball to children escaping domestic abuse at a local shelter.

For Steve Sack and his team at Michigan Elite, the opportunity to become a Sister Club was a natural fit. They saw this partnership as an avenue to fulfill their broader mission of teaching life lessons, character development, and interpersonal skills to young athletes. The alignment between the missions of Michigan Elite and Starlings solidified their decision to join forces.

A Collaborative Partnership

Michigan Elite is fully committed to supporting Starlings Detroit, the new club being formed. While both clubs will operate separately, Michigan Elite’s coaches and staff will provide guidance and assistance to the new club. Steve Sack himself played an instrumental role in finding the director for Starlings Detroit. Furthermore, Michigan Elite will offer other forms of support, including tournament entries and shared training sessions.

A State-of-the-Art Facility

One unique aspect of this collaboration is the use of the state-of-the-art St. Joseph’s Mercy Elite Sports Center, a 74,000 square-foot facility at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan. Michigan Elite has signed a lease agreement for the facility, and as part of the partnership, Starlings Detroit will gain access to these top-notch facilities and equipment.

A Seamless Transition

Sack praised the ease and efficiency of the process in establishing the Sister Club relationship. Starlings Volleyball provided a ready-made framework that Michigan Elite seamlessly integrated into their operations. The partnership quickly gained traction, setting the stage for a fruitful collaboration.

Embracing the Future

Though their first event has yet to take place due to the pandemic, Steve Sack is confident that Michigan Elite’s players and parents will embrace the Sister Club arrangement. The club has witnessed firsthand the positive impact that community engagement can have on young athletes. This new venture represents a chance for Michigan Elite’s community to come together and make a difference in the lives of more aspiring volleyball players.
