Beach Update: FIVB Beach World Champs, Espinho Rosters, USA Junior Beach Champs

The beach volleyball scene is abuzz with exciting news this week! Team USA is gearing up to compete in the highly anticipated FIVB Beach World Championships starting on Friday in Austria. Meanwhile, one American team will be representing the country in the FIVB 2-Star tournament in Portugal, and the High Performance program is all set to host the USA Junior Beach Championships. Let’s dive into the details of these thrilling events!

FIVB Beach World Championships

The 2017 FIVB Beach World Championships is about to kick off in Vienna, Austria, from July 28th to August 6th. Team USA will be sending eight talented teams to compete for the gold in this prestigious tournament. The US has a strong track record in the World Championships, with an appearance in the final four every year since 1997. In 2015, Nick Lucena and Theo Brunner achieved the best result for the US by finishing in fourth place. This year, the US teams are determined to improve on their previous performances and make their mark on the world stage.

On the women’s side, Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross lead the American charge, followed by April Ross and Lauren Fendrick, Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, and Emily Day and Nicole Branagh. As for the men’s teams, Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena are the highest ranked US duo, followed by Casey Patterson and Theo Brunner, Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb, and John Hyden and Ryan Doherty. It’s worth noting that none of the American partnerships in this edition have previously played together in the World Championships.

Unfortunately, Kerri Walsh Jennings had to withdraw from the World Championships due to a shoulder injury she sustained in Olsztyn, Poland. Her partner, Nicole Branagh, will team up with Emily Day for the tournament. However, since Walsh Jennings and Branagh secured their spot through a NORCECA quota, the country’s quota will be allocated to the National Federation for registration of eligible players.

Espinho 2-Star Tournament

While most of the US teams head to Austria, one men’s team will be competing in the men-only FIVB Espinho 2-Star tournament in Portugal from July 28th to 30th. Trevor Crabb, usually paired with Sean Rosenthal, will be teaming up with Avery Drost for this event. Drost has previously appeared in one other World Tour tournament in 2017, finishing fifth in Xiamen with Ryan Doherty. Crabb and Drost last played together in 2015, finishing 33rd at the Lucerne Open.

USA Junior Beach Championships

The USA Volleyball High Performance department will be hosting the thrilling USA Junior Beach Championships in Hermosa Beach, California, from July 31st to August 2nd. This tournament will showcase the incredible talent of young beach volleyball players in the Under 13, 15, 17, and 19 age groups. A total of 128 teams will be participating, with athletes who qualified through the High Performance Zonal Championships in June and winners of the Junior Beach Tour Championships earning invitations to compete.

Excitingly, the USA Junior Beach Championships will also feature teams from Canada, Czech Republic, Qatar, and Puerto Rico. With 21 USAV regions represented, this tournament promises to be a thrilling display of skill and competition. Stay tuned for the release of the schedule, brackets, and seeding on July 30th after the technical meeting.
