Beach Update: FIVB in Croatia, AVP San Fran

With the Olympic qualification phase completed, the USA beach teams are utilizing the Swatch FIVB Major Series and the domestic AVP Tour to fine-tune their skills before the Olympics. Let’s take a look at the latest updates from the beach volleyball world.

FIVB World Tour and AVP Tour

USA’s Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson, who finished fourth at the Olsztyn Grand Slam in Poland, celebrated their ninth top-four finish in 40 FIVB events as a team. Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat also had an impressive performance, achieving their best finish of the year by securing fifth place in Poland.

Now that Olympic qualification is behind them, the teams will continue their journey on the FIVB World Tour and also participate in the AVP San Francisco Open (June 23-26). Following that, they will head to Porec, Croatia, for the Porec Major, which kicks off on June 28.

Leaders on the FIVB World Tour

April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings are currently leading the FIVB World Tour with 4,010 points in seven events, closely followed by Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst with just a 30-point difference. It’s worth noting that Ross and Walsh Jennings have not only excelled in terms of points but have also earned the highest amount of prize money among all men’s and women’s teams in 2016, with earnings totaling $174,000.

Among the men, Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena have an impressive win percentage of 88.5% with a record of 46-6. Ross and Walsh Jennings are ranked second on the World Tour for women, with a remarkable win percentage of 90.0% and a record of 45-5.

Upcoming Tournaments and Championships

There are three Majors left on the FIVB World Tour before the Olympics. Immediately following the Games, the Long Beach Grand Slam will take place. In September, the Tour will conclude with the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals, and in October, the Puerto Vallarta Open will wrap up the year in Mexico.

The Porec Major, the second Swatch FIVB Major Series event of 2016, is set to take place after a one-week break from the FIVB World Tour action. The tournament will feature age groups ranging from 13 to 23 for both boys and girls. The A1 and A2 Junior Beach National Team members will receive automatic entry into the Championships.
