Beach Update: USAV Sends Teams to Swatch Beach FIVB World Tour Finals

USA Volleyball has secured one men’s and one women’s team in the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals, scheduled to be held in Hamburg, Germany from August 23-27. Olympians Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena have earned one of the eight automatic berths in the men’s competition, while Olympian Brooke Sweat and her partner Summer Ross have qualified for the women’s event.

Qualification for the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals is based on a team’s top eight finishes over a period of 365 days. Dalhausser and Lucena have been playing together since 2015, while Sweat and Ross joined forces in February 2017. The remaining four berths in each gender category will be Wild Card selections made by the host, and the announcement is expected to be made later this week.

Dalhausser and Lucena currently hold the top spot in the World Ranking, with 4,560 points, which is 380 points ahead of the second-ranked team. In 2017, they have already secured three podium finishes, including two gold medals in Moscow and Gstaad, and a bronze in Fort Lauderdale. The other teams that have earned automatic berths in the men’s competition are Alvaro Filho/Saymon Santos, Alexander Horst/Clemens Doppler, Evandro Goncalves/Andre Loyola, Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira, Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Nikita Liamin, Bartosz Losiak/Piotr Kantor, and Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo.

The tournament will consist of 12 teams per gender, with pool play starting on August 23. All teams will advance to the single-elimination bracket. The women’s quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on August 25, with the finals scheduled for August 26. The men’s quarterfinals will take place on August 26, followed by the semifinals and finals on August 27.

In the previous editions of the World Tour Finals, the United States achieved notable results. In 2016, John Hyden/Tri Bourne earned a bronze medal, while Dalhausser/Lucena and Kerri Walsh Jennings/April Ross tied for fifth place. In the inaugural year of the tournament in 2015, Dalhausser/Lucena won the silver medal, Lauren Fendrick/April Ross tied for fifth, Jennifer Kessy/Emily Day finished seventh, and Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson also finished seventh.
