Men’s College Roundup for January 12

Welcome to the Men’s College Roundup for January 12th! This week, we have some exciting matches to cover in both NCAA Division I/II and Division III. We’ll also be highlighting athletes who are part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program. Let’s dive in!

NCAA Division I/II

No. 1 UCLA

UCLA has had a strong start to the season, winning all three of their matches so far. Their most recent victory came on Thursday night against Lewis, with a score of 3-1. This weekend, they will be playing against No. 10 Loyola Chicago and then competing in the First Point Collegiate Challenge next weekend.

Some key players from their match against Lewis include Ethan Champlin, who had 14 kills, and Guy Genis, who had 7 blocks. These players have also been part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program, representing their country on various occasions.

No. 2 Long Beach State

Long Beach State, also known as “The Beach,” won two exhibition matches against Alberta at the end of December. They are now eagerly waiting to play their first official match of the season against Long Island at home. After that, they will be facing Saint Francis (Pa.) and Merrimack in the coming weeks.

Like UCLA, Long Beach State has players who have been part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program. Mason Briggs, Clarke Godbold, Sebastian Rodriguez, Ben Braun, Dane Hillis, Sebastiano Sani, Chris Connelly, and Aiden Knipe have all represented their country at different levels.

No. 3 UC Irvine

UC Irvine has had a mixed start to the season, with one win and one loss. However, they have moved up one spot in the rankings this week, taking the No. 3 spot from Hawaii. Their first match was against George Mason, which they lost 2-3, but they bounced back with a 3-0 win against Saint Francis.

In their match against Saint Francis, Nolan Flexen led the team with 17 kills, and Connor Campbell had 5 blocks. Two players from UC Irvine, Cole Power and Akhil Tangutur, have been part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program.

No. 4 Hawaii

The Rainbow Warriors are off to a solid start with a 2-1 record. Although they dropped one spot in the rankings this week, they are determined to bounce back. They suffered a tough 2-3 loss to No. 10 Loyola Chicago but responded with a dominant 3-0 win over Emmanuel.

Keoni Thiim led the team with 8 kills, while Tread Rosenthal and Kurt Nusterer had 4 blocks each in their match against Emmanuel. Tread Rosenthal, Chaz Galloway, and Kai Rodriguez have all been part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program.

No. 5 Ohio State

The Buckeyes have started the season strong with a 3-0 record, maintaining their No. 5 ranking. In their most recent match against Saint Francis, Jacob Pasteur stood out with 23 kills, and Justin Howard had 2 blocks.

Ohio State has players like Shane Wetzel, Jacob Pasteur, Ben Putnam, and Kyle Teune who have represented the USA Volleyball National Team at various levels.

NCAA Division III

In NCAA Division III, we have some exciting teams to watch as well.

No. 1 Stevens

The defending national champions, Stevens, have started the season on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart. Nathan Lancia led the team with 12 kills, and Connor Feulner had 4 blocks in that match. They will be preparing for the Stevens Tri-Match with St. Joseph’s University, Long Island, and Kean University.

No. 2 North Central (IL)

North Central is yet to start their official matches for 2024 but will have one more exhibition match with Saint Xavier before facing Dominican University (Ill.) on January 18th.

No. 3 Vassar

Vassar will begin their season on January 12th against Adrian College at the Cal Lutheran Invitational. They will be joined by two other top-20 teams, No. 12 Cal Lutheran and No. 14 Santa Cruz, in this invitational.

No. 4 Messiah

Messiah will start their 2024 season later this month when they host Drew University on January 20th. Last season, they had a strong record of 27-6 during the regular season.

No. 5 Juniata

Juniata recently concluded their exhibition match against Saint Francis (Pa.) and will officially begin their season at Stevenson on January 13th.
