Men’s Junior National Team Headed for Cuba

The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team is gearing up for an exciting challenge as they head to Havana, Cuba for the NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championship from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2, 2018. This prestigious tournament will determine the team that qualifies for the 2019 FIVB U21 World Championship. Let’s take a closer look at the team composition and the competition they will face.

Team Composition

The 12 players selected for the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team are a talented and diverse group. Four players from the roster have previous experience playing for the Boys’ Youth National Team at the FIVB U19 World Championship, namely Jaylen Jasper, Devin Joslyn, Kyler Presho, and Sam Lewis. The team’s setters are Blake Crisp and Joe Kelly, while the outside hitters include Joslyn, Kevin Lamp, Spencer Olivier, and J.P. Reilly. The middle blockers are Lewis, Presho, and J.T. Martin, and the opposites are Jasper and Luke Denton. Garland Peed takes on the role of libero.

Notably, the team features three current Stanford players (Jasper, Presho, and Reilly), with Lamp committed to join Stanford in the future. Loyola Chicago is represented by one current player (Joslyn) and one signee (Denton). UC San Diego, USC, Pepperdine, Long Beach State, and Princeton each have one player, whether active or a signee, on the roster.

The Competition

The NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championship is a highly competitive tournament, with Cuba having won the title a record five times. The United States is also a strong contender, with three championships to their name, including the most recent victory in 2016. This year’s tournament will feature intense matches, and the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team is well-prepared after weeks of training at the Adversity Volleyball Club in Vernon Hills, Ill.
