Olympic Women’s Indoor Volleyball Schedule Set

The 2016 Olympic Games women’s indoor volleyball pool play schedule has been announced, and the U.S. Women’s National Team is set to compete among the world’s best in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Pool B Action

Team USA will kick off their campaign on August 6, facing NORCECA rival Puerto Rico at 5:05 p.m. local time. The Americans will then take on the Netherlands on August 8 at 3 p.m. The team will continue their quest for victory by challenging Serbia on August 10 and Italy on August 12, with both matches scheduled for 3 p.m. The U.S. will conclude pool play against second-ranked China on August 14 at 5:05 p.m.

Match Schedule and Venue

All matches will take place at the iconic Maracanãzinho, with three sessions per day. The first session will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:20 p.m., followed by the second session from 3:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m., and the third session from 8:30 p.m. to 12:20 a.m.

Road to the Quarterfinals

The top four teams from each Olympic group will advance to the quarterfinals on August 16. The top seed from each pool will face the fourth seed from the other pool, while a drawing of lots will decide the crossover quarterfinal opponents for the second- and third-place teams. The winners of the quarterfinal matches will move on to the semifinal medal round on August 18. The tournament will conclude on August 20 with the gold- and bronze-medal matches.

Team USA and Their Rivals

The U.S. Women’s National Team has a strong track record, having won six titles in seven tournaments since their victory over China in the 2014 FIVB World Championship. However, China managed to claim the 2015 FIVB World Cup despite losing to the Americans along the way. Serbia, which finished second at the World Cup, also defeated the U.S. during the competition.

Preparations and Previous Encounters

Team USA has been diligently preparing for the Olympic Games, and their last warm-up event before the Games will be the FIVB World Grand Prix preliminary round. The team is set to compete against Germany and Thailand on June 10 and 11 respectively, followed by a match against host country China on June 12.
