New Year, New Partnerships as Beach Pro Tour Begins in Mexico

Several U.S. Beach National Team athletes are ready to kick off the 2022 international beach volleyball season at the Volleyball World Beach Volleyball Pro Tour Tlaxcala Challenge in Tlaxcala, Mexico.

Women’s Flight Highlights

In the women’s flight, top-seeded team Terese Cannon and Sarah Sponcil will showcase their skills, along with Emily Day and April Ross, who are ranked third. Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske, as well as Emily Stockman and Lauren Fendrick, are also among the top 10 teams.

Men’s Flight Highlights

In the men’s flight, Chaim Schalk and Theo Brunner have secured a spot in the main draw. Meanwhile, Chase Budinger and Troy Field, Andy Benesh and Nick Lucena, Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander, Miles Evans and Logan Webber, and Tim Brewster and Travis Mewhirter will need to advance through the qualifier.

Lauren Fendrick will play her first international beach volleyball tournament since 2020.

Play begins on Wednesday, March 16, with two rounds of qualification, followed by the main draw on Thursday, March 17. Fans can catch all the action by livestreaming the matches on volleyballworld.tv.

New Partnerships and Competitive Debuts

Several teams are entering their first year or first full year together, with Schalk and Brunner being the only pair to have competed throughout the entire 2021 FIVB campaign. Quiggle and Schermerhorn, Hildreth and Wheeler, Budinger and Field, Crabb and Sander, and Brewster and Mewhirter have all played together at least once in the past year, but the remaining American duos in Tlaxcala will be making their competitive debuts.

Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour

The Tlaxcala Challenge is the first event of the newly launched Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. The tour consists of three levels of events: Elite 16, Challenge, and Futures. Challenge tournaments serve as a stepping stone to the Elite 16, with 24 teams of each gender competing in modified pool play before moving on to a single-elimination bracket to determine the champion.

International Participation and Olympic Returns

One significant change in FIVB tournaments this year is the removal of country quotas, and this change will be evident in Tlaxcala. The tournament will feature a diverse mix of teams, with U.S. and Brazilian pairs making up nine of the 16 women’s main draw teams and over a quarter of the men’s qualifier teams.

Additionally, the event will welcome back 10 teams and 35 athletes from the 2020 Olympic Games, including Swiss women’s bronze medalists Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre, as well as the second-seeded men’s team, Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands.
