Sam Houston State Men’s Club Team Dreams Big

Huntsville, Texas may not be known as a men’s volleyball powerhouse just yet, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be in the future. Julius Vickerie, the founder of the men’s volleyball club at Sam Houston State University, has big dreams for the team. This week, they are making their debut at the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) Championships in Denver.

A New Journey Begins

Vickerie and his team are excited about their first appearance at the NCVF Championships. It’s a series of firsts for them – their first time in bracket play, their first time winning more than one set, and their first time traveling out of state as a team. Vickerie couldn’t be happier about the experience.

Building the Club

Vickerie started the men’s volleyball club at Sam Houston last semester, and they have quickly made their mark. Thanks to a $3,000 Diversity and Inclusion Grant from USA Volleyball, the team was able to afford to compete in Denver without increasing player dues. Vickerie’s dedication to the sport and the club led him to change his major to sports management with a minor in marketing, allowing him more time to focus on the club’s growth.

Looking Towards the Future

Although Sam Houston is currently 0-5 at the tournament, Vickerie sees a bright future ahead for the team. He wants the club to become a name that people remember and for their participation in the NCVF Championships to become an annual tradition. Vickerie’s vision extends beyond his time at Sam Houston – he wants the club to thrive in the long run.

Vickerie also believes in increasing diversity in the sport. He hopes to see more young people from diverse backgrounds participating in volleyball. By introducing the sport to areas with a majority of people of color, Vickerie believes they can learn and grow, ultimately increasing the sport’s diversity.
