Tulsa Awarded 2018 USAV Indoor HP Championships

The City of Tulsa has been selected as the host for the 2018 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships (HPC) to be held from July 24-28 at the Cox Business Center. This prestigious event, which Tulsa previously hosted in 2014, is expected to draw in more than 100 teams and 1,200 athletes competing in eight different age and gender championship brackets.

USA Volleyball Senior Director, Tom Pingel, expressed excitement about the return of the championships to Tulsa, stating, “Tulsa has proven to be a wonderful host for past USA Volleyball events and a growing market for volleyball in the country.”

The HPC serves as a platform for boys’ and girls’ teams from the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline, regional High Performance teams, and international teams to showcase their skills. Over the years, several youth and junior national teams from countries such as the United States, Chile, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru, Canada, New Zealand, and Mexico have participated in this event.

Vince Trinidad, the Executive Director of the Tulsa Sports Commission, warmly welcomes the return of the HPC to Tulsa. He stated, “We look forward to promoting Tulsa as a preferred sports destination and hosting athletes, coaches, and fans in Tulsa next summer.”

The HPC features an international theme and incorporates some variations of FIVB rules. Matches are played in a best-of-five sets format, with most teams competing in eight matches during the event. The tournament also introduces some new FIVB rules, including the primary and secondary libero, and the experimental rule of six total substitutions per set.

Prior to the championships, approximately 400 athletes from the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline will participate in a rigorous five-day training camp, vying for spots on the top teams in their respective age groups. The coaching staff for these teams is composed of experts from the top collegiate and junior programs across the United States, all of whom are part of the USA Volleyball High Performance coaching pipeline.

Tryouts for the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline are scheduled from January to March for boys and from February to April for girls.
