USAV Beach Officiating: A Look Back at 2019

The world of beach officiating is constantly evolving, and it’s essential to reflect on our progress to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our growing sport. In this article, we’ll delve into the highlights of the 2019 beach season and take a closer look at the training programs and opportunities available for aspiring officials. Let’s explore our achievements and the exciting prospects that lie ahead.

Enhancing Training Opportunities

One of the main concerns in any officiating program is providing sufficient training opportunities for aspiring officials. In 2019, we made great strides in this area. We conducted one National Beach Referee course, introducing 10 new National Referees to the sand. Additionally, we organized three Zonal Beach Referee camps, resulting in 25 new Zonal Referees. In collaboration with Regions, we also hosted two Beach Referee clinics, training 16 new Local Referees.

Impressive Certification Numbers

The hard work and dedication of our officials paid off in 2019, as 51 beach officials earned or upgraded their certifications. We now boast over 500 active certified beach officials, with approximately 200 at the Local level, 200 at the Zonal level, and 110 at the National/International level. Over the past five years, we have nearly doubled the number of certified beach officials—a remarkable feat!

Meeting Growing Needs

With 145 colleges sponsoring beach programs, the demand for officiating services continues to rise. As our sport’s popularity soars, we must continue to develop new officials to meet the ever-increasing demand. The growth potential is vast, and we’re committed to cultivating a thriving officiating community.

Executing Major Tournaments

In 2019, the USAV Beach office organized 11 professional qualifier events and three major beach championships, attracting a total of 88 beach referees. These dedicated officials worked tirelessly for over 300 days, officiating paid beach events. We also collaborated with the AVP, providing our referees with eight opportunities to showcase their skills in high-visibility settings. We’re proud of their contributions to the success of these competitions.

Striving for International Success

Our efforts extend far beyond national boundaries. We’re thrilled to report that three new beach international candidates—Kirsten Boessneck, Magda Gleaves, and Troy Gravett—have been sent to NORCECA and will eventually represent us at the FIVB. This achievement reflects the high caliber of training and mentorship provided by USA Volleyball.

Exciting Opportunities in the Horizon

If you’re already a certified beach official, it’s essential to stay up-to-date with upcoming events. Collegiate assignors are actively securing talent for the 2020 spring events, so be sure to update your blocks at Arbiter and communicate with the assignors. Keep an eye out for the calendar of events for the 2020 season, which will be posted by Sean and Phil at the USAV Beach office. It’s a valuable resource that will help you plan and stay involved in beach officiating.
