Women’s Sitting Team Reaching Beyond to Start 2019

The U.S. Women’s National Sitting Volleyball Team is gearing up for an exciting 2019. After clinching gold at the 2016 Paralympic Games and securing three consecutive silvers at the World ParaVolley World Championships, this team is hungry for more success.

To raise the bar even higher, the team made a change for their first full training block of the year. Instead of their usual training grounds at the University of Central Oklahoma, they gathered at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a five-day intensive training session. This allowed the team to mix up their training routine and focus on more than just on-court practice.

One of the main goals of this training block was to have Elite Athlete Health Profiles conducted. The Sports Medicine department at the Olympic Training Center provided a range of screenings to identify any weaknesses and make necessary adjustments ahead of the Paralympic Games, which the team has already qualified for. This year and a half of preparation time will ensure that the athletes are in peak condition for the games.

Although the team trains year-round, they had a well-deserved break of two to two-and-a-half months after winning silver at the World Championships. Bringing the whole team back together can be a challenge, but the athletes are committed to regaining their rhythm and competitiveness. The younger players on the team have shown great progress alongside the veterans, making for a harmonious blend of experience and fresh talent.

The training block in Colorado Springs offered more than just a change of scenery. Exposing the women to the Olympic Training Center and its resources provided a cultural perspective and motivation. The athletes were able to take advantage of facilities not typically available to them in Oklahoma, such as body composition testing and other specialized services.

In addition to the physical training, the team also had the opportunity to learn from nutritionists, financial planners, and career education experts. USA Volleyball, USOC, and SafeSport all contributed to the athletes’ personal and professional development.

This is an exciting time for the U.S. Women’s National Sitting Volleyball Team as they continue to push their limits and strive for excellence. With their dedication, talent, and the support of the Olympic Training Center, they are ready to make their mark on the court.
