Q: What were your thoughts as you watched the 2016 Olympic tournament?

A: Watching people you love compete for something they have worked so hard for is truly moving. Seeing guys like Thomas Jaeschke, Aaron Russell, and Taylor Sander, who are my age or were my collegiate teammates, succeed in such a remarkable way was awe-inspiring. It ignited a fire within me to work tirelessly towards earning my spot in the next Games. Training with Team USA is an honor, but standing alongside my brothers while the national anthem plays before a game is where I aspire to be.

Progress as an Opposite Player

Q: How do you feel about your progress as an opposite player since returning to playing after your mission?

A: Physically, transitioning back from my LDS mission wasn’t too challenging, but mentally, it was a different story. The intense, raw aggression that characterizes my play was somewhat lost during my mission, and reclaiming that mindset has been an ongoing journey. However, I believe my skills have significantly improved. While I am aware that I still have a long way to go, I feel more in control of my body and possess a deeper understanding of the game. Progress is an ongoing process, and I am committed to continuous growth and improvement.

Playing for BYU and Overcoming Challenges

Q: What do you enjoy about playing for BYU this season, and what challenges have you faced?

A: A change in mindset has made my experience playing for BYU incredibly enjoyable. In my first season back from my mission, I placed immense pressure on myself, striving to be more than what I was. It was mentally taxing, but it ultimately made me aware of who I am and what I can achieve. I have rediscovered my love for volleyball by focusing solely on my role and not worrying about meeting others’ expectations. Recently, I encountered a minor injury that requires time to heal, and accepting this setback has been challenging. However, it has reminded me of the very real possibility of a career-ending injury. I am excited to overcome this setback and continue to improve.

Exploring Photography and Other Interests

Q: How did you get started with photography, and what do you enjoy about it? What are your other interests?

A: Photography is a relatively new passion of mine. Over the past year, I have immersed myself in this art form and found great joy in it. Photography offers me an outlet that athletics cannot provide. It connects me with love and people on a different level, and this connection is something I deeply appreciate. I am grateful that photography enables me to combine my love for travel with capturing unique stories from around the world. Apart from photography, I am known to let loose on the dance floor. So, if you see me dancing, be prepared for a great time!

Looking Forward to 2017

Q: What are you looking forward to in 2017?

A: I am incredibly excited to represent Team USA this summer. I hope to have the opportunity to play for the senior team and, despite the nervousness that inevitably arises, continue to excel at a high level. Additionally, this being my final season as a college athlete, I am eager to embark on a new overseas experience. I feel ready to push myself and reach new heights in my career.
